Hey #FABSQUAD. It’s Dr. Jamie- YOUR Lifestyle Pharmacist back again with some juicy tips to keep you fit, fabulous, and fulfilled without prescribed pills. Just like you, I love a long Labor Day weekend getaway. It’s another chance to feel the sand between your toes, lounge next to the pool, wear an itty bitty bikini, sassy one-piece swimsuit, or sexy swim trunks.
Vacation is sometimes viewed as a time for overindulging on food and alcohol. Often times we exercise and clean up our bad eating habits BEFORE our vacation only to come back home carrying souvenirs in our luggage and extra weight on our bodies. Operation “get bikini ready” is in full effect before we leave, but we toss our healthy daily habits to the side the moment we arrive at our exotic destination.
Before you head out this Labor Day I have some advice on how NOT to ruin your healthy lifestyle while on vacation. After all it would be such a shame to leave home lean and return bloated and in disbelief. Don’t freak out! Dr. Jamie has your back and your tummy covered.
Here is the roadmap for enjoying your vacation without ruining your figure and lifestyle:
Eat Clean Meals
Go heavy on the veggies by having a salad as your appetizer and some type of vegetable as the side dish that comes with for your entrée. Eat fresh fruit as snacks and as dessert. Be sure to keep the main course lean by ordering your meat grilled, broiled, or baked.
Don’t skip your daily workout just because you are on vacation. There are amazing options for staying physically active at your disposal. You certainly can hit the fitness facility for some treadmill and weights is that is your thing. If you want to do something totally different opt for a jog on the beach, a game of water volleyball, or even a hike through nature.
Avoid Sugary Beverage Traps
If you are a drinker swap those sodas for water AND limit the amount of sugary juices that you drink. I’m not saying you can’t enjoy some adult beverages, it’s a vacation after all. Just be smart about it. Have a glass of wine instead of a sweet frozen drink or have your cocktail made on the rocks with club soda and fresh muddled fruit.
Know Your Limits
If you are traveling to an all-inclusive resort, resist the temptation to order a drink every time your glass is empty. It is not wise to get a refill every time the waiter or waitress passes by. According to experts at Brown University, “the liver can only metabolize 1 standard sized drink per hour so consuming more than that causes your system to become saturated and the alcohol will accumulate in the blood and tissues until it can be metabolized.”
Following these simple tips will keep you looking and feeling great during your vacation and once you get back home.
