Hey FABSQUAD! It’s me Dr. Jamie The Lifestyle Pharmacist here to help you be fit, fabulous, and fulfilled without prescribed pills. I’m a busy woman just like you who is juggling a career, relationships, and a business. So yes darling you are in the right place to get actionable tips on how to live your BEST LIFE even though it’s really fast paced.
Summer is here and I’m so excited about wearing sandals, shorts, and sundresses. You too? Well before you head out into the sun for your next girls day out or lunch date with your spouse or significant other listen closely. The sun’s rays are a known cause of the development of skin cancer. In fact “1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime.” So yes while the sun is beautiful, it can also be deadly.
No worries! Dr. Jamie has you covered. Here are six ways to take the sting out of the hot summer sun.
Resist the urge to show a lot of skin while you’re out and about. Wear long pants, maxi skirts, and long-sleeved shirts for protection from the sun’s UV rays. I know you’re thinking as hard as I have been working on getting summer time fine did she really just say cover up? I did and it’s for your own good.
The right hat can actually take your outfit from drab to FAB plus keep you protected from the damaging rays of the sun. For the best protection opt for a hat with a wide brim that shades your face, back of your neck, and ears. Sorry all hats are not created equal. Straw hats with holes in them will let the sunlight through. Oh and those adorable straw fedoras provide no coverage so no need to buy another one.
Protect Your Eyes
Sunglasses look good on you and are GOOD FOR YOU too. Protecting your eyes from UV rays is essential to preventing clouding of the lens of the eye and damage to the retina. Have you been dying to buy a new pair of designer sunglasses? The wait is over! Just make sure that they block out 97-100% of both UVA and UVB radiation.
Remember the Sunscreen
Wearing sunscreen is an absolute must regardless of your complexion. There is a myth that it is unnecessary for people of color to wear sunscreen. From latte, to caramel, to deep cocoa complexions- no one is exempt from the harmful UV rays of the sun. When choosing a sunscreen be sure to select one that is SPF 15 or higher, and be sure to reapply every 2 hours if you are swimming or sweating.
Limit Your Exposure Time
In as little as 15 min the sun’s rays can damage your skin. So it’s super important that you limit your exposure time in the sun. Seek shade by sitting under an umbrella, covered patio, or even under a tree under while outside. A palm tree would be fabulous! It’s also best to minimize sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. because these are the sun’s peak intensity hours.
When spending time in the sun you must stay hydrated. You can expect to start feeling thirsty, but don’t reach for dehydrating liquids like soda, juice, or alcohol. Instead replenish your body with water. You should also snack on fruits and veggies since they have hydrating effects. Apples and carrots are two of my favs.
