Winter doesn’t officially arrive until late December (December 21st to be exact) but it is already feeling like it in the Bluff City. During the winter we look forward to breaking out those cozy sweaters, heavy coats, and enjoying the glow from the fireplace. What we don’t want are the unpleasant things that can come with winter: colds and the flu or packing on the pounds. So today I’m here to give you 5 tips for staying well this winter. Oh and as an added bonus I shared these tips Live on “Bluff City Life” on Channel 5 in Memphis. I’m super excited to add TV segments as another method for keeping you fit, fabulous, and fulfilled without prescribed pills!
#1 Wash Your Hands Hands
Hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Wash them after using the bathroom, before eating or handling food, and whenever you arrive home after being in a public place. It is recommended that you wash your hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds. Singing the happy birthday song from beginning to end two times is a way to be sure that you meet the time requirement.
#2 Get the Flu Vaccine
Influenza or the flu is a potentially serious illness that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently. What we do know is that vaccination has been shown to have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and even the risk of flu-related death in children. According to the CDC, everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every season.
#3 Load Up on Fruits and Vegetables
Eating during winter doesn’t have to be boring and bland. Keep foods like white bread and pasta to a minimum and fill your plate with dark leafy greens, winter squash, and citrus which thrive during the chill of winter. These fruits and vegetables are rich in with nutrients, antioxidants and fiber which can increase your energy and help keep that dreaded winter weight gain away.
Following these 5 tips will allow you to make this winter one the healthiest and happiest possible.
