4 Ways Pet Ownership Improves My Health

Dr. Jamie HardyWellness

It’s estimated that approximately 33% of Americans have considered pet ownership during the COVID-19 pandemic. As humans, we are wired to crave physical touch and thrive on interaction. That’s why fostering or adopting a furry friend has been on the minds of so many people- including ME! In fact, we added an Old English Bulldogge puppy to our family in April 2020. With us being home more than ever because of the stay-at-home orders, Thor became a bright spot in the early days of this pandemic that was filled with so much uncertainty. Feeling as though we have even more love to give, our family has grown again.  In September 2021, we added another Old English Bulldogge puppy to the Hardy bunch. Our sweet girl Stormie is so precious. So yeah, I’m officially #DogMom of two.

According to research, the coronavirus pandemic is harming the mental health of millions of people in the U.S. and around the globe. It’s no surprise that there’s been an increase in the anxiety and depression experienced by people during this extended pandemic. Things like the fear of becoming infected at a high-risk job, the sadness and grief of losing family members and friends to the virus, or even the isolation from physical distancing impacts our mental health.  As a frontline worker, pet ownership has replaced my feelings of sadness and worry with love, laughter, and companionship.

Picture time with Thor requires determination. It took three attempts to capture this photo. He prefers to play.

There is no better time than now to take the pet ownership leap. Take my word for it-  I jumped into the pet ownership pool two times without a single regret. The cuddle time, playtime, and exercise with my pets absolutely helps to keep me happier and healthier.  Here are four ways that pet ownership may benefit your health.

Benefit #1- Decreased Stress and Anxiety

Data shows that individuals are observed to be less stressed whenever they are with their pets. The impact of pets is so positive that some treatment centers specializing in addiction, depression, and anxiety recommend that patients consider getting a pet as part of their treatment and rehabilitation.

Our dogs like to chew so we reward them with chew sticks from Hollywood Feed.

A little home obedience training is underway. Thor and Stormie know how to sit on command.

Benefit #2- Better Heart & Blood Pressure

Research suggests that pet owners have lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol. This can be linked to the fact that pet owners live a healthier and more active lifestyle. Pets motivate owners to get up early to feed them and then take them outside for a walk.

We got Stormie from a breeder in Texas. This was the first time that I held her.

Nothing beats playtime with Thor. He wants to play all day.

Benefit #3- Mood Boost

Ever wonder why your pet looks sad whenever you feel sad? Animals are known to have an innate understanding of emotions. They can sense when humans are happy, sad, or even anxious. Pets have been shown to greatly improve the mental and emotional state of the people they are in contact with.

Our pups give us a reason to spend time outside meeting new people. This picture with Thor and my husband is one of my favorites.

Benefit #4- Increased Socialization

Being a pet owner increases opportunities for socialization. Pet ownership is a common thread that joins people together.  Plus our pets are one of the best conversation starters and an easy way to break the ice when meeting someone new.
