Discover Bold Flavors and Culture In Puerto Rico

Dr. Jamie HardyTravel

Magnificent, vibrant, and flavorful are characteristics that come to mind when I think about Puerto Rico.  I recently had the pleasure of visiting this Caribbean gem and it’s safe to say that I had a wonderful time. I did a little bit of research while prepping for my trip. I was amazed to learn that the island of Puerto Rico has almost 300 miles of coastline and nearly the same number of beaches. Yes! You read that right- almost 300 beaches.

The view from our hotel.

The view from our hotel room looked like a beautiful postcard, but it was oh so real.

Puerto Rico has a very rich history. The fusion of Taino, African, and Spanish traditions create unique flavors and sounds that are impossible to overlook. That’s why during my visit, I had the opportunity to explore Spanish colonial architecture, centuries-old buildings, plus enjoy mouth-watering cuisine.

The architecture was stunning.

The vibrant colors of the buildings made walks through town such a treat.

When deciding on hotel accommodations, the Caribe Hilton stood out from the pack. Not only is this hotel iconic, but it is also conveniently situated between historic Old San Juan and the culturally rich Condado area. When our diver pulled up at the hotel, we were immediately welcomed by the open-air lobby and attentive staff.

The open air lobby at the Hilton Caribe was so welcoming and modern.

Being enrolled in Hilton Honors has its perks.

This expansive property has 17 exotic acres filled with convenient amenities like a resort style pool, full-service spa, tennis courts, beach cabanas, and delicious dining options.

Pool time at the Hilton

I had to spend some time in this beautiful pool.

Hilton Caribe is a “gem of the Caribbean” that has been dazzling guests since 1949.  Despite its history, it felt modern and fresh.  Contemporary comforts were at my fingertips due to the recent renovation of 652 guest rooms and suites.

Chilling in the hotel lobby.

The hotel lobby was a great place chill. There were so many comfty places to kick my feet up.

Guest rooms are decorated in cool and calming tones that perfectly compliment the gorgeous views off the balcony. The accomodations are spacious and feature Wi-Fi,  HDTV, and a private balcony with a view of the ocean or a beautiful garden.

I could get used to waking up to this view everyday.

Puerto Rico has more to offer than just its beaches, old buildings, and savory foods.  Something that I immediately noticed was a love and deep appreciation for art and music.  The incredible live music was one of the reasons I had to visit the restaurant Guararé.  It is in the heart of the Santurce art district. I knew we were in the right place once I heard the live music spilling out into the street.  I watched in awe as people danced to the salsa music along the sidewalk leading to the restaurant.

Guararé

At Guararé live music compliments the food for a multisensory experience.

The bar is a piece of artwork too.

Locals and visitors enjoy and laughter and converstion. It was such a welcoming vibe.

The local cuisine exceeded my expectations and hit all the right flavor notes. I dined on signature dishes like mofongo which is made of deep-fried green plantains, and tostones which are double deep-fried plantains.

I ordered the tostones too which were delicious.

An added travel bonus is that a passport is not required for US citizens.  This trip was a much-needed change of scenery that left me feeling invigorated and refreshed.  Exploring the island of Puerto Rico felt like going on a fun date with my hubby every day for a week.

Dressing up for a romantic dinners was on the itinerary too.

The next time the urge to travel strikes you, be sure to add Puerto Rico to the list of places you are considering.

Ocean Views

Spending time by the water is one of my favorite things to do. I feel so calm and at peace from the sound of the waves.
